Why not further partition it (internally), perhaps one might be accessed from inside the summerhouse and one externally, with a separate key?
Usually designed at 1200mm (approximately 4ft) deep the space is just enough to satisfy most requirements; and inset from the side walls just enough to be tucked away so you'd almost never know it was there.
